It looks like the windows experience team for Windows 8 looks like it may be ditching the mouse! At the D9 conference last week, Microsoft gave a preview of the new operating system that is expected to be released in 2012 which is heavily influenced by the interface designs of Windows Phone 7.
Live tiles are showcased which relies on the user touching the screen and swiping back and forth to navigate the operating system. It will be interesting how this gets implemented using a mouse as it won’t be the most intuitive behaviour to be accustomed to – I barely use any gesture commands with my mouse as it just doesn’t feel normal. Hopefully the prices of touch screens come down when Microsoft releases it as the redesign will likely fail if users can’t exploit its capabilities.
At least one thing is for certain, Microsoft is taking its gloves off and isn’t afraid to throw normal user interface conventions out the window!
